Radio
I have been interested in radio on and off for many years, but it wasnt until i got to uni and took an active role in my student radio station that i realised that this interest was in fact a deep passion for the radio and all bits of it.
So other then helping out at road shows etc when i was just a ickle child this is what i have done radio wise..
I started at CUR1350 in my first year of uni in the news team helping to produce daily news bulletins and also being in the studio as part of the weekly news show, at this time i did my presenter training (if you can call it training, it was more like “you seem to know what you’re doing.. off you go”) and started to present shows, in my time at CUR1350 i have presented politics shows, sports shows, live elections coverage and alot of entertainment shows..
At the March AGM 2007 i became the Head of Outside Broadcasting (Known as the Head of Broadcasting Outside or HOBO) a new position to take over responsibility of things like live elections coverage (which had never been done before), our coverage of the ‘Bumps’ a twice annual river race that lasts for a few days on the river cam for which we do live riverside commentary, and i also got us to start doing university open days live from parts of the campus..
This was one of my most enjoyable years to take on the radio, i love outside broadcasts, that feeling that anything could go wrong at any time what i call ‘Seat of your pants radio’ i have even considered perusing this as a career option within radio but i’m not sure if i have the technical knowledge to do it for real.. (although i would love to give it a try lol)
The following year after supporting and working with the then current station manager i stood for and became Station Manager, and things didnt stop moving from then.. Station Managers do a huge amount, nearly everyone i know has to live and breath their station and then attempt to balance it with Uni and a social life..
Anyway i continued as Station Manager for just over a year and a half, and in that time increased our relationships with our Students Unions and both of our Universities for which we serve, including some grant funding for the station, ended up helping / project managing the studio refurbishment (i will upload pictures), and the biggest thing was to co-author a community radio license application that was granted in March 2009, this has to be my biggest accomplishment to date and the thing i am most proud about!
Other radio things;
As well as my time at CUR1350 i have also done some other radio projects which are the following:
SRA (Student Radio Association) The SRA is something that i believe in, i have been to many events and am currently the regional officer for London and East Anglia, which involves organising regional events and supporting stations in that region.
Scout Radio, which will end up with its own sub page in the end, however in the short answer its a project to see Radio activities taking part at scout events (including RSLs as major events), as well as producing scout based programming for scouts to use as well as syndication to anyone that wants it, this programming would be used to engage and promote the adventure of modern day scouting.
Student Radio Advertising, My company that i launched at freshers to promote, support and sell Student Radio Advertising, its received a great reception from brands, agencies as well as student radio stations themselves. Student Radio Stations dont necessary have to or want to run as commercial stations, however with budgets getting pinched left right and centre the extra money can not only help pay for basic running costs but also help pay for extra things for stations.
